Customer Focus: Our Story - Meet Dante
Every rescue dog has a story, and this month we're delighted to introduce Dante. From a difficult start in life to becoming a much-loved family member, his journey is a wonderful reminder of the difference a loving home can make.
Dante is a handsome six-year-old rescue dog with a heart of gold, and this is his story.
Dante's story began at the Scottish SPCA, but before he came into Janette and her partner's lives, they had experienced every dog owner's worst heartbreak. Within just over a week, they lost their beloved Labrador cross, Willow, aged 15, followed by their German Shepherd, Leyna, who sadly passed away at just nine years old.
Feeling completely heartbroken, they decided they couldn't face having another dog.
But as many dog lovers know, sometimes life has other plans.
A visit to the Scottish SPCA in Dumbarton wasn't meant to lead to another dog, but after an initial enquiry about a different dog, the centre contacted them to say another dog would soon be returning – Dante.
Dante had experienced a difficult start to life. He had been left outside in all weathers before being rescued by the Scottish SPCA. After being adopted, he was returned just three days later after having a couple of accidents in the house, despite never having lived indoors before.
When Janette first met Dante, she instantly knew he was something special.
"The minute he walked through the door, I just loved him."
After several visits, Dante finally found his forever home with Janette and her partner. Not long afterwards, the Covid lockdown began, giving them plenty of time to settle into life together.
Within just two weeks, Dante was fully house-trained and quickly became an irreplaceable member of the family.
Today, Dante is described as a gentle, sensitive soul. Although he was understandably wary of people after his early experiences, he has grown in confidence and happily accepts fuss from people he meets.
Dante also has a very special bond with Janette's partner, who lives with several health conditions, including epilepsy. He naturally keeps a close eye on him, always seeming to know when to stay nearby.
When he's not looking after his family, Dante enjoys all the things dogs do best. Long walks are often followed by a well-earned Puppuccino at Starbucks, and he loves travelling in the car with the window down, simply watching the world go by.
Holidays are always family holidays too, as Dante prefers to stay with his humans rather than go into kennels.
He's also the perfect restaurant companion. While everyone else is enjoying their meal, Dante is usually so relaxed under the table that people often don't even realise he's there!
Like many dogs, Dante loves a routine. Every morning he looks to Mum for his dental stick before spending the day with Dad, who feeds him and enjoys plenty of games together. When Mum gets home from work, Dante patiently waits for his evening treat before playtime begins. Eventually Dad is politely dismissed, as it's officially "Mummy and Dante time!"
Dante also has a lovely friendship with his cousin, Ellie, a little dog owned by Janette's sister. The pair enjoy spending time together and even go on holiday as one big happy family.
Thank you so much to Janette for sharing Dante's wonderful story with us. From a difficult beginning to finding a loving forever home, Dante is a reminder of just how resilient rescue dogs can be.
