Indoor Games for "No Walk" Hot Days With Your Dog

When the temperature rises, it's perfectly OK to swap your daily walk for some indoor fun. Dogs need mental stimulation just as much as physical exercise, and a few simple games can help keep them happy while staying cool and safe.
1. Brush Up on the Basics
Hot days are the perfect opportunity to work on everyday skills such as loose lead walking, focus, sits, stays and recall practice around the house and garden (shade areas only).
Using your dog's walking harness and double-ended lead indoors can help reinforce good habits without the distractions of the outside world. A few short, positive training sessions are often far more rewarding than one long session.
2. Find the Treats
Hide treats around a room and encourage your dog to sniff them out. Scent work is a fantastic way to exercise your dog's brain and build confidence.
3. Learn a New Trick
Teach something fun like "spin", "touch", "middle", or "paw". Just five minutes of training can leave your dog pleasantly tired.
4. Create a Mini Obstacle Course
Use cushions, chairs and blankets to make a simple course for your dog to walk around, over or through. Keep it gentle and fun, especially in warm weather.
5. Settle and Relax
Learning to switch off is an important life skill. Reward your dog for calmly settling on their bed or mat while you enjoy a cool drink together.
Remember...
Missing walks on hot days won't harm your dog, but heatstroke can.
Early mornings and late evenings are often the safest times for walks during a heatwave. Until then, enjoy some indoor training, keep plenty of fresh water available and celebrate the small wins. Every calm sit, loose lead step and moment of focus is helping your dog become a happier, more confident companion.
